The previous SN No. 4 Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs officially saw their run as national champions end in a 7-6 home loss to the previously unranked Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles. Meanwhile, their rivals, the SN No. 1 St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves, continued to look like the dominant team on the national high school football scene.

The season began, of course, with their positions reversed; Mater Dei was listed as the unanimous preseason No. 1 by every major selector, including here in The Sporting News High School Football Top 25. The Monarchs entered the season as the defending back-to-back national champions having won a consensus title in 2023, splitting the vote with the Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels and the DeSoto [TX] Eagles, before winning a unanimous title in 2024.

They appeared to be well-stocked to make a run at a third title, before struggling in their first two games. They beat the No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders, 26-23, on the road in the season opener before slipping past the Kahuku [HI] Red Raiders at home in a shockingly close 21-18 decision. Still, they entered the third game of the season on September 12 as solid favorites to win at the Top 25 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies who were coming off a 33-27 loss in overtime to the same Santa Margarita squad that upset Mater Dei last Friday night.

Centennial had not beaten the Monarchs in a decade, but when it was all said and done, the Huskies held on for a 43-36 win in a wild affair in Corona, California. Mater Dei fell from the the No. 1 spot to No. 7, but bounced back on the road a week later to upset Bishop Gorman, the team that replaced them at No. 1. That opened the door for St. John Bosco to move into the No. 1 position in the SN Top 25 where they've resided ever since. Mater Dei then won on the road two weeks ago at the Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers in an underwhelming 25-10 victory before last Friday's stumble against Santa Margarita Catholic.

Both those teams now have two losses, and Mater Dei falls to No. 17 in this week's rankings. Santa Margarita re-enters the list at No. 15 – just in time for another big home game against that No. 1 St. John Bosco squad in a game that will be The Sporting News High School Football Game of the Week. The Braves are 7-0, and they are widely expected to win against an Eagles' squad that has featured an elite defense while struggling at times to generate offense. Santa Margarita is under the direction of first-year head coach Carson Palmer, an alum of the program and a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL All-Pro at quarterback.

St. John Bosco only has to win out to win the title as The Sporting News High School Football National Champions – a feat that still could be easier said than done. A Santa Margarita win, meanwhile, would throw the rankings into complete disarray while opening the door for a new national title contender to emerge – most likely the SN No. 2 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders or the SN No. 3 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams. The one familiar name that won't be in the running, no matter what they do from here out, is the one we all expected to be standing at the very end.

Understanding the SN Top 25 through transparency

Like any set of rankings, things may not always make sense at first glance, and there are as many approaches to ranking teams as there are selectors. Some rankings are simply a reflection of what has happened to date, and many of these are algorithm-based, subject to wild weekly swings like the Massey Ratings that are part of The Sporting News Composite Rankings released on Wednesdays.

Other rankings are more predictive – an attempt to account for what has happened, while attempting to line up teams in a way that will reflect potential future results. SN's approach falls somewhere in line with this way of thinking, and each week we first attempt to rank the teams by resume before considering wins and losses and head-to-head results. No system is perfect, but at least understanding our approach can help understand why we have the teams where we do.

With Mater Dei finally out of the way for good, it's currently a three-horse race out front with either St. John Bosco, IMG Academy, or Grayson all in line to take a shot at the title should any of the other two teams in that trio stumble before the finish line. All three of those teams have huge games remaining on the schedule, however, and it isn't out of the question that if they all lose at least once, we could be forced to look elsewhere for a national champion. While the scenarios are complicated, there are still, theoretically, if not realistically, paths to a national title for all of the top 12 teams in the SN Top 25.

The entire SN Top 25 is unchanged this week as no ranked teams lost last week. That means St. John Bosco continues its run at the top of our list for at least another week.

We broke some of this down above, but suffice it to say, this week's SN High School Football Game of the Week could alter the national championship picture considerably if Santa Margarita is able to upset St. John Bosco. The Eagles have an elite defense that yielded just seven points to Mission Viejo and Mater Dei while giving up only 14 to Bishop Gorman. The flip side is, the Eagles' offense managed only 10 points of its own, cumulatively, in those three games, and only put up 17 against an unheralded Servite [Anaheim, CA] Friars' squad. Bosco appears to be the better overall squad by a fair margin, but the game is on Santa Margarita's home field and if Bosco is unable to crack the Eagles' defense, then no matter how inept their offense is, Santa Margarita could keep it within striking distance for a late upset.

IMG Academy's opponent this week is from the United Kingdom as the NFL Academy pays a visit to the Sunshine State. It could be a stiff test for IMG as the NFL Academy has already defeated the Hun [Princeton, NJ] Raiders, 34-21, in the season opener while giving the current SN No. 8 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders a fight last Wednesday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the home of London's vaunted Premier League side. The Ascenders can't take this game for granted because it will count in the standings – and the SN Top 25 rankings.

SN No. 3 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams

Grayson hasn't missed a beat since losing quarterback Travis Burgess for the season several weeks ago. They are 8-0 headed into a bye week in what is beginning to look like an undefeated regular season.

St. Frances made quick work of Connecticut's St. Thomas More in the latter's 2025 season debut last week. But they enter the stretch run with a challenging opponent this weekend against the Hun Raiders with games against an emerging powerhouse in The St. James Performance Academy [Springfield, VA] Strivers and the SN No. 2 IMG Academy Ascenders in the weeks to come. It's about to get interesting in Baltimore.

Centennial has completed a remarkable climb into the Top 5 after an early-season 33-27 overtime loss to Santa Margarita nearly derailed the 2025 season before it really got started. They can't overlook teams like this Murrieta Valley squad, but ultimately, the Huskies should get to the end of the regular season unscathed from here out.

They'll find the going a little easier, and a little shorter, this week in a visit to Monarch about 30 minutes away after flying across the Atlantic Ocean for last week's game in England.

Bishop Gorman just keeps clicking away the wins against Nevada opponents, and that will continue against the winless Somerset Academy Losee Lions this Friday.

They get a week off to prepare for a Cardinal Gibbons' squad that should be a step up in competition, but still a few steps behind the Lions in terms of talent.

Sierra Canyon made it seven in a row last Friday night in a 45-14 romp past Chaminade, and they should see a similar result Friday night when they host the Notre Dame Knights of Sherman Oaks.

Allen has been winning in dominating fashion all season, and it was enough to finally propel the Eagles past the Randle Lions in our Texas rankings. They jump five spots heading into this weekend's contest against the Plano West Wolves, a talented squad that, nevertheless, will find it hard to keep pace with these high-flying Eagles.

Edna Karr continues to dominate against a lineup of quality opponents in Louisiana, but it isn't the kind of schedule that will allow the Cougars to move up much in the national rankings. A Top 10 finish nationally, however, remains a reasonable goal.

DeMatha is second only to St. Frances Academy in Maryland, and maybe the entire Mid-Atlantic region with the possible exception of the emerging program at The St. James Performance Academy in Springfield, Virginia. They'll have to avoid any stumbles in games like this Saturday's matchup against a talented Bishop McNamara squad to reach their ceiling which would be a potential finish in the Top 10.

While Mater Dei's run of national titles is officially over, they can still play spoiler later this season when they get their shot at the No. 1 St. John Bosco Braves in the regular-season finale. They can also still, possibly, win at least a share of the Trinity League title, but they've displayed a penchant for playing to the level of their opponents in 2025. If they do that against this Servite squad, they could be in danger of losing another game they are expected to win.

Duncanville played just its fourth game of the season last Friday night, but it didn't slow them down in a 48-28 romp past their rivals from nearby DeSoto. And, it shouldn't have much of an effect on their readiness for this week's visit to Lancaster.

South Oak Cliff continued its leisurely stroll through district play in the Dallas ISD ranks, and that will continue this week against a .500 Wilson Wildcats' team. The Bears should win out through the regular season, and they aren't likely to be challenged again until the playoffs.

Don Bosco Prep escaped one of its stiffest challenges to date in a 17-14 overtime win at St. Joseph Regional last Saturday afternoon. They should have an easier go of it this week at a Seton Hall Prep squad that is only 2-4 in 2025.

Bixby continues to display one of the best offenses in the country, but the quality of competition won't do much for them here in the SN Top 25. They are the No. 1 team in the country in the Massey Ratings, for now, but back-to-back games against an Edmond North squad with one win and the winless Enid Plainsmen this Friday night makes you wonder how long they can hold onto that spot, too. It will be another one-sided affair, but it isn't going to attract much attention on the national level.
