Cleveland Cavs forward De'Andre Hunter exits final preseason game with knee injury

Cleveland Cavaliers small forward De'Andre Hunter suffered an injury during the preseason finale against the Detroit Pistons.

CLEVELAND — Cavaliers small forward De’Andre Hunter did not play in the second half of the Cavs’ preseason finale Oct. 14 against the Detroit Pistons at Rocket Arena.

The Cavs announced Hunter suffered a right knee contusion.

Hunter ended up on the floor with about five minutes left in the first quarter and came up limping after trying to draw a charge against Pistons forward Tobias Harris. The Cavs called timeout with 4:55 remaining, and Hunter limped to the bench, where medical personnel checked on him.

Hunter returned to the game with 9:28 left in the second quarter and proceeded to log seven minutes of action before halftime. He looked fine, so the Cavs are likely just exercising caution.

Hunter started against the Pistons and scored 14 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field (2-of-3 on 3-pointers) in 14 minutes. He added two assists, one rebound and a steal.

With small forward Max Strus sidelined after undergoing foot surgery Aug. 26, Hunter is projected to start for the Cavs when they open the regular season Oct. 22 at the New York Knicks. The Cavs stated Strus is expected to resume basketball activities in approximately three to four months from the time of his surgery in late August.
