Kai McGrew granted full eligibility in appeal after transfer from Lawrence North to Fishers

Kai McGrew has full athletic eligibility to play his senior year of high school basketball.

The 6-foot-9 McGrew, one of the state’s top players, transferred from Lawrence North to Fishers after his junior season. McGrew was originally granted only limited eligibility from the Indiana High School Athletic Association and again on the first appeal.

On Tuesday, the Department of Education Case Review Panel overturned the decision, a source confirmed. McGrew will have full eligibility at the start of the season.

Lawrence North Wildcats Kai McGrew (25) blocks a shot by Terre Haute North Vigo Cam Fennell (12) on Saturday, March 22, 2025, during the game at New Castle Fieldhouse in New Castle. The Lawrence North Wildcats defeated the Terre Haute North Vigo, 75-56.

McGrew, who averaged 14.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists as a junior at Lawrence North, enrolled at Fishers on April 22, which was before the new IHSAA transfer rules went into effect, meaning his transfer process was under the previous transfer rules. The limited eligibility ruling limited McGrew to playing junior varsity games for 365 days from his last varsity game, which was in the Class 4A semistate on March 22 with Lawrence North.

McGrew, a Junior All-Star and ranked No. 4 in the state by IndyStar in the 2026 class, won the Class 4A state title two years ago and was the state runner-up last year. Junior guards Jason Gardner Jr. and Cooper Zachary return from last year’s team.
