Sophomores dominate YAIAA boys, girls cross country races

The league meet determines District 3 qualifiers.

Red Lion and Dallastown runners have been ruling recent YAIAA cross country meets.

That trend continued in the 2025 races at John Rudy Park.

Leah Navarro clocked an 18:49.2 to win her second straight league title. A Wildcat has won the girls title every year since 2021.

Red Lion sophomore Ryne Coble ran 16:20.2 to extend the Lions’ winning streak in the boys’ race to three years.

Navarro’s second title run wasn’t as fast as her first, but it played out in similar fashion. South Western’s Lyla Eltz jumped out to the early lead, but Navarro was hot on her heels.

“I caught her a little before the first mile, but then she passed me at the hill with about a mile left,” Navarro said. “And then I passed her again a few meters later.”

Eltz came in 10 seconds behind Navarro. The real excitement came for third place. Dallastown’s Abigail Evans and Northeastern’s Sophia Treglia ran stride for stride over the last 100 yards, with Evans taking third by a step.

Dallastown's Leah Navarro (1357) leads the pack during the YAIAA Girls Cross Country Championship at John Rudy County Park on Oct. 14, 2025, in East Manchester Township.

Coble was the fifth Lion across the line last year as Red Lion claimed the team title. This year the race belonged to him.

He led from start to finish, not as fast as he wanted, but it was more than good enough.

“I didn’t get out as fast as I wanted,” Coble said. “I was hoping to go around 16:10, but I’m happy with the way I ran.”

Coble was alone as he hit the last bend and ran the slight downhill to the finish. Teammate Matthew Yost followed, 12 seconds behind Coble.

Red Lion sophomore Ryne Coble wins YAIAA Boys Cross Country Championship in 16:20.2 at John Rudy County Park on Oct. 14, 2025, in East Manchester Township.

The league races combine all three classes in one boys race and one girls race. But they determine the teams and individuals who will compete in the District 3 meet on Oct. 25 at Big Spring.

Dallastown won the overall boys and girls team titles and will join five other Class 3A teams in the district meet. Those teams will be South Western, York Suburban, West York and Red Lion on the girls’ side and York Suburban, Red Lion, York Tech, South Western and Central York on the boys’ side.

Eastern York was the top girls Class 2A team, with Susquehannock and Kennard-Dale also qualifying. Susquehannock, Bermudian Springs and Eastern York qualified for the boys Class 2A meet.

York Catholic and Delone Catholic qualified for the girls Class A race and Delone Catholic will be in the boys’ race.

York Catholic's Sheila Driscoll and York Suburban's Sarah Deal race to 15th and 14th-place finishes, respectively, at the YAIAA Girls Cross Country Championship at John Rudy County Park on Oct. 14, 2025, in East Manchester Township.

Sheila Driscoll was on crutches for last year's race, when York Catholic didn't have enough runners to compete as a team. What a difference a year makes.

"We have four freshmen this year and three more coming up," longtime coach Jeff Alloway said. "Last year's junior high county champ, Abby Bullen, is our No. 2 this year. Her good friend, Scarlett Bird, she's never run before. She came out and all of a sudden she's just killing it."

Driscoll agreed that this year is certainly different than last year.

"We went from having three girls to having eight," she said. "The team dynamic has been so fun this year and to be able to lead them has been so much fun."
