HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) – High school volleyball and soccer highlighted a busy night in the Twin Tiers.
On the high school soccer scene, the Horseheads boys earned a hard fought victory over the NTL’s top team on Monday. After having Sebastian Garcia’s 1st half goal called back, Dom Wood delivered on a penalty kick with 20 minutes to go in the game. The lone goal helped the Blue Raiders to a special 1-0 victory over Athens on Senior Night.
The impressive win marks the end of the season for Horseheads, who finishes the year with a (5-9) overall record. The Wildcats (10-5-2) sit atop of the Northern Tier League and will battle for gold in the upcoming postseason.
Elsewhere in Section IV, several teams earned big wins to close out the regular season. With sectional brackets set to be revealed on Thursday, the Horseheads girls bested Waverly 5-0. The game which featured 2 goals by Maddie Ribble also marked both teams’ annual Teal Night, raising awareness for ovarian cancer.
On the volleyball court, Corning was the lone local STAC team to earn a victory. The Hawks swept Horseheads, while Elmira and Waverly suffered setbacks on the road in straight sets. The Express were bested by STAC West Champions Ithaca, while Owego topped the Wolverines.
