EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – With six returning sophomores on the University of Evansville women’s basketball team, Memorial grad Avery Kelley has taken on a leadership role.
The Purple Aces have one upperclassman on the roster with Mireia Mustaros transferring into the program from Odessa College, a junior college in Texas. There are no seniors on the roster, so head coach Robyn Scherr has been relying on her returning group to lead by example.
“Avery is a real positive special type of person, special type of leader who really lifts her teammates up,” she said. “She’s that teammate that’s going to step in and help make sure everyone is included and everyone is involved.”
Kelley alongside Camryn Runner had some success last season and naturally have fallen into roles as two of the more vocal leaders on the team. But just like her days as a Tiger in high school it’s still something she’s learning on the go.
“This year we’re working on leadership in a lot of aspects. So that when we do get down in games we can easily come back. Because we have the girls, we have the coaches, we have the group to be really good. We just got to have that faith and that grind to win these games,” Kelley said.
The Purple Aces will tip off the season on Tuesday, October 28th in Meeks Family Fieldhouse against Roosevelt at 6 p.m.
