Thibaut Courtois has high expectations for his compatriot Senne Lammens, who’s now looking to make a name for himself at Manchester United.

Expected to be the eventual heir to Courtois’ throne in Belgium, Lammens has spent the last fortnight rubbing shoulders with the two-time Champions League winner whilst away on international duty.

The 23-year-old Red is still awaiting his first senior cap for his nation, but has watched on from the bench as a backup shot-stopper on a handful of occasions, more recently doing so during Belgium’s 4-2 win over Wales on Monday.

Prior to the break, Lammens was granted his United debut after over four weeks of waiting.

Ruben Amorim had held off utilising the deadline-day signing straight away, instead letting Altay Bayindir retain his place between the sticks against Manchester City, Chelsea and Brentford.

Then, when United welcomed newly-promoted Sunderland to Old Trafford on October 4, Lammens was given the nod.

He proceeded to oversee a commanding display in his maiden outing, making three saves in total, including two inside the box, completing two high claims and one clearance. Perhaps more impressively, he secured United’s first clean sheet of the campaign at the first time of asking.

The former Royal Antwerp star was named Man of the Match for his efforts and earned the highest Sofascore rating of any player on the pitch (7.8).

This week, Courtois was pressed on whether he’d been keeping tabs on how Lammens was faring, which he had been, while he also wished him well for this Sunday’s crunch clash with arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield – where the Real Madrid icon will be visiting himself in a Champions League encounter come November 4.

“His first game was a flavour of what United will get. He’s a tall guy, he is not afraid to come on crosses, and he’s a kid with personality,” said the experienced Courtois.

“I’m sure he can do a good job. He has a tough game this weekend, so I hope that if he plays, it will go well for him. All the best to him.”
