Since starting 2-0, the Cincinnati Bengals have done nothing but move in the wrong direction.
With franchise quarterback Joe Burrow out until late December, Cincinnati's season is all but on life support after four straight losses, dropping their record to 2-4.
The Bengals face a pivotal matchup Thursday night when they take on the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers, and if they lose, they are all but done for the season and should consider cutting bait with players who don't have a long-term future in Cincinnati.
Boomer Esiason urges Bengals to trade Trey Hendrickson
One of those players could be Bengals' longtime edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, who is in the last year of his contract and is set to test free agency next spring.
In fact, one former Bengals star, quarterback Boomer Esiason, thinks they should get started on trade discussions already, and urged Cincinnati to move Hendrickson now.
"If he is healthy, I would trade him. You could get some quality draft picks back because that’s how they are going to rebuild their team," Esiason said in a sit-down interview with Kay Adams.
"They have got the offense. They have got to make some key acquisitions in the draft on defense to go along with Shemar Stewart and to see if they can rebuild that defense."
To the former MVP's point, even if Burrow were healthy, would the team be in a position for a deep playoff run?
It seems like the Bengals are still plagued with the same issues from last year, an over-reliance on offense to make up for their shortcomings on defense.
They need to tear down the defense and build it back up piece by piece, a process that could be accelerated with the addition of premier draft capital supplied by a Hendrickson trade.
