Renowned illustrator Neal Adams produced the art as his first commissioned piece for Marvel
Original artwork of The Incredible Hulk, created by legendary illustrator Neal Adams for his first piece of Marvel-commmissioned art, is selling at auction, and bidding already has approached $40,000 at Heritage.
The work was created for the box lid of Aurora’s 1966 model kit, which would include a Hulk figurine for children to enjoy, and featured the Hulk against a yellow backdrop, clenching one fist.
“This is not just a production artifact; it's a turning point, when mass-market toy culture and comic book artistry collided to create something enduring and electric,” the auction lot description reads .
Following this Marvel debut, Adams went on to become a world-renowned comic artist, working for decades on comics including Batman, Green Lantern and X-Men.
Though this artwork was used in a commercial product, Adams was most well-known for his cover art.
The original art he penned for Batman No. 251, considered one of the most memorable Joker covers of all time, sold for $600,000 at Heritage in 2019.
