It seems that frustrating New York Yankees fans were given a big reason to expect a far better season from shortstop Anthony Volpe next year.

Before he was promoted two years ago, Volpe was viewed as one of the jewels of New York’s farm system. There were even rumblings that he could be the heir apparent to Derek Jeter as shortstop. He struggled at the plate during his rookie season. While he didn’t post world-beater stats in his second season, he showed progress with his bat.

That is why there was excitement that 2025 could be a breakthrough season when he looked really good in April. In that month, he posted a season high .245 average and .765 on-base plus slugging as he smashed three homers, knocked in 15 RBIs, and actually walked a season best 12 times. However, things started to go downhill for him in the months ahead, including hitting below the Medoza line in July and August.

It has led to speculation that the team should move on from the 24-year-old this offseason. Well, a new report may explain the significant performance decline at the plate for Volpe after April.

  • Anthony Volpe stats: .212 AVG, .272 OBP, .391 SLG, .663 OPS, 19 HR, 72 RBI, 65 R, 18 SB

According to the New York Post, Volpe battled through a serious shoulder injury throughout the 2025 season. In a May 3 game against the Tampa Bay Rays felt a “pop” after hurting his non-throwing shoulder.

He chose to play through the issues and received a cortisone shot during the All-Star break. However, he actually re-aggravated the injury early in September. The setback led to a second cortisone shot and being sidelined from Sept. 10th to the 15th.

“The 24-year-old had stretches of better offensive production immediately following both cortisone injections, suggesting the shoulder may have been bothering him at the plate,” the Post reports.

After the season came to a close, Volpe was diagnosed with a torn labrum in his left shoulder and underwent surgery on Tuesday. He should be ready for the start of the 2026 season, but that could change depending on how his recovery this winter goes.
