NFL trade season is heating up, and a notable Buffalo Bills reporter believes one specific stud wide receiver should be at the top of the team’s wishlist before the Nov. 4 NFL trade deadline.
After getting off to a fast 4-0 start and looking like one of the best offenses in the NFL, Bills Mafia is starting to panic after a pair of losses, including an upset to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6. Unsurprisingly, it has led to speculation about what the team needs to do to improve the roster for the second half.
In a new piece about the glaring needs the Bills have before the trade deadline, The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia suggested the losses to the Falcons and Patriots proved Buffalo badly needs a deep threat.
“The Bills aren’t winning in the intermediate range, and they aren’t challenging defenses consistently enough deep down the field,” Buscaglia wrote. “Without another piece that defenses have to account for, it allows opponents to creep into the box against the run and play the matchup with little concern that the Bills’ receivers will burn the weak spot of their defense.”
Should the Bills trade for Chris Olave before deadline?
Buscaglia mentions that the team had the same need in 2024 and went big by trading for Amari Cooper. While the move didn’t work like they hoped, he doesn’t think it should make them shy away from trying again. One realistic trade option could be New Orleans Saints 2022 first-round pick Chris Olave.
“With the inconsistency and injuries to Joshua Palmer and Curtis Samuel, finding an impact Z receiver who can separate, win the ball in the air, run crisp routes, and uncover in short, intermediate, and deep parts of the field should be the top priority. That pretty much sums up Olave’s skill set,” the Bills reporter wrote.
- Chris Olave stats: 6 games, 39 catches, 342 yards, 1 touchdown, 8.8 yards per catch
Furthermore, Buscaglia added that Olave is on the books for one more season at a fair rate of $15.5 million after the Saints picked up his fifth-year option. New Orleans is headed to another losing season and is one of the few teams that are clear sellers a few weeks out from the trade deadline. So Buffalo could get Olave soon if they make a bold offer.
After moving on from star receiver Stefon Diggs two years ago, the team has looked to fill his void with multiple players. Olave has the type of talent to be just as good, and a Pro Bowler if he were getting passes from reigning MVP Josh Allen.
Despite a messy QB situation in NO, his first two seasons, he posted over 1,000 yards in each season. One can only imagine how good he can be with an elite signal caller.
