Judging from the "fire Harbaugh" chants that bellowed throughout M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday following the Baltimore Ravens' latest ugly loss, it's pretty clear there are Ravens fans out there who want head coach John Harbaugh gone.
If you're in that group, don't hold your breath for that to happen, according to one of ESPN's NFL insiders.
Dan Graziano said he does not believe Harbaugh "is in any danger of losing his job" right now, even if the Ravens' season continues to spiral out of control.
The "Fire Harbaugh" chants at Baltimore's Week 6 game against the Rams are worth addressing. Anything is possible, of course, if a team continues to lose games it expected to win at a high rate. But at this point, I don't think John Harbaugh is in any danger of losing his job. And if he did, he'd instantly become the top head coaching candidate on the market this winter. In a league that keeps cycling through coordinators-turned-head-coaches, teams would jump at the chance to bring in a guy who has done the big job for 18 years and has won more than 60% of his games -- including 13 playoff games and a Super Bowl. Tough times in Baltimore right now, and the fans are going through it, but it's a smart, circumspect organization that knows how good it has it at the head coach spot.
It has been a brutal season for the Ravens, but some of the things that have gone wrong are out of Harbaugh's control.
Baltimore has been riddled with injuries, and even quarterback Lamar Jackson has missed a couple of games, although he's expected back after the bye.
That said, Harbaugh has been in town for 18 years and it has been a long time since the Ravens won a Super Bowl under him (2012).
Like Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh, Harbaugh is definitely a good coach, but the huge lapse since that Super Bowl victory (and in Tomlin's case, even a playoff win) has been too large to ignore.
Making that harder to stomach is the fact that the Ravens are 1-5 and going nowhere after entering the season with Super Bowl aspirations.
Even still, it looks like it's going to take a lot more for the Ravens to part with their long-time head coach.
