NEED TO KNOW

  • Jason Kelce returned to the Eagles practice facility to attempt the vigorous workout routine he would do during his NFL playing days
  • Kelce beat his personal best record for speed, but struggled at agility tests and in the weight room with Eagles head strength coach Fernando Noriega
  • After the workout, Kelce said he felt "f---ing exhausted" and "beat up"

Jason Kelce's still got it!

The former Philadelphia Eagles star, 37, who retired from football in March 2024 after 13 seasons in the NFL, returned to the team's training facility to see if he could still complete a vigorous in-season workout routine with head strength coach Fernando Noriega.

In a video shared by the Eagles on social media, Kelce tells viewers he hopes to complete his former routine, but admits, "I'm not gonna lie, it's been a while."

Kelce proved during his impressive showing, a year and a half after retiring from football, that he can still meet a handful of his personal bests — even breaking a personal record in speed!

Noriega said he knows Kelce "has lost a few pounds," referring to the former center's 30 lb. weight loss after retirement, but predicted he wouldn't beat his personal best record.

"My fastest time I ever hit in practice was 19.2 mph," Kelce shared, before going on to beat it with a time of 19.64 mph.

After learning he'd gotten faster, Kelce said, "Are you f---ing kidding me? Let's go," and attempted the run again hoping to break 20 mph. He didn't end up hitting that goal, but the former center still seemed proud with his final speed of 19.72.

"Some of the guys probably playing now can't hit that," Noriega said.

Kelce's workout also highlighted the former NFL star's sense of humor as he cracked jokes throughout the session, poking fun at his own inflexibility and asking the camera men, "We'll cut that, right boys?," after an embarrassing moment.

During the agility portion of the workout, Kelce completed the challenge but seemed to struggle, admitting, "No joke, I used to be very, very good at that," but said he hadn't attempted it "in over a year."

Kelce also completed a weight training session during the workout, starting with a force plate and attempting to beat his 2023 personal best.

Some attempts in the weight room were "embarrassing" and "really bad," said Kelce, who started with five 135 lb. barbell squats "just to warm up" before moving on to 225 lbs.

"In season, a number I'd routinely try to hit was 500 pounds," Kelce shared, calling it a "psychological" benefit for him on the field. "I just felt strong, whether or not it was doing anything for me," he said.

Kelce seemed unsure he'd be able to handle the 505 lb. barbell, even telling Noriega, "I almost blew my back out on that one" after lifting the 455 lb. barbell and asking his ankles to "hold up" for him.

Ultimately, he couldn't lift the 505 lb. barbell, but called it a "good try" before admitting, "I'm a little tired."

The workout wasn't done there, though. Kelce also completed lateral pulldowns, incline dumbbell presses, bicep curls and more.

"I'm so f---ing tired. I'm fading quick," Kelce said towards the end of the workout.

Lastly, Noriega had Kelce do 30 seconds of holding plates, which proved to be a challenge for Kelce. "Years of punching people and grabbing them have made my thumbs very weak," Kelce said, telling his trainer he couldn't finish the time.

After the workout, Kelce asked Noriega how he thinks he'd hold up against current NFL players. Noriega politely said, "Let's just keep it NFL Jason Kelce vs. now Jason Kelce," the trainer joked, as Kelce laughed and said he was "f---ing exhausted" and "beat up" after the session.

After sharing the video on social media, Kelce reflected on the experience in his own post, writing, "This was humbling… honestly, speed was still there, but getting pinned trying to squat 505, and my power numbers were way down."

He added, "I’m gonna blame us doing a full workout on the field first, and just know in my head that a fresh Jason Kelce can still hit that…"
