The Miami Dolphins are 1-5 and are heading towards being sellers at the NFL trade deadline after Week 9. Week 7 has the Dolphins facing the Cleveland Browns, and while they should be able to win and move to 2-5, regardless of what happens, Miami selling some talent at the deadline wouldn't be surprising.
Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, and Jaylen Wright are all players who've been mentioned as trade candidates for the Dolphins this season. But, according to a new report from Connor Hughes of SNY.tv, a star Dolphins offensive skill player might be available.
The New York Giants, after their season-changing win over the Philadelphia Eagles, are looking to add a wide receiver. Hughes is reporting that, of their top three targets, Dolphins' Jaylen Waddle is one of them.
Dolphins' Jaylen Waddle emerges as Giants trade target
Waddle is a 26-year-old wide receiver who would certainly help any team that acquired him. But the first-round receiver recently signed a big $84.75 million extension with the Dolphins, making his contract a difficult one to trade. That isn't stopping the giants from being interested in the veteran receiver.
"Chris Olave (Saints), Jaylen Waddle (Dolphins), and Jakobi Meyers (Raiders) are among the top potential targets," Hughes reports. While the Giants want to land Waddle, it won't be easy.
"The challenge with acquiring Olave or Waddle, according to sources, lies in persuading their current teams to part ways." Hughes writes. "A directive from ownership, front office shakeups, or significant draft compensation might be enough to shift the conversation."
If Miami were to move on from Waddle, it'd likely coincide with a major fire sale. With Tyreek Hill out for the rest of the year and likely some of the 2026 season as well, Miami doesn't have a strong wide receiver room if Waddle isn't on the roster.
Malik Washington and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine would be the leading receivers, neither of whom has 70 yards in the six games this season. Trading Waddle would be a huge blow to the offense, so Miami would need a good reason to make such a trade.
As Hughes mentions, if the Dolphins get an incredible offer from the Giants, one that's hard to pass up, then a trade might seem worth it. Or, if Mike McDaniel is fired along with Chris Grier and there's a major shakeup in the organization, then a trade might be more feasible.
But McDaniel and Grier have seemingly safe jobs for now, so a Waddle trade, while the subject of recent rumors, seems unlikely. If Miami did trade him, it'd be for a strong return.
This season, Waddle has 390 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 29 receptions. His best year was in 2022 when he had 1,356 yards and eight touchdowns on 75 receptions.
He's been a staple of the Dolphins' offense since 2021, and trading him would be the end of an era in Miami. A trade isn't close, nor likely at the moment, but these rumors are cause for concern for Dolphins fans, as Waddle could be playing in the final games of his Dolphins career ahead of the post-Week-9 trade deadline.
