After a 4-19 record across parts of two seasons, the Tennessee Titans fired head coach Brian Callahan. The Titans have since announced former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Mike McCoy as the interim head coach.

McCoy had previously been serving as the Titans’ senior offensive consultant. Who knows, with a bit of luck down the stretch, McCoy just might be able to become the Titans’ next full-time head coach when they go through the interview process during the offseason. He does have a decent amount of experience, and his 27-37 record could be a lot worse. If Callahan had led the Titans to a 42.2% win rate, perhaps he’d still be on the job.

However, the Titans are sure to consider a long list of candidates for the head coaching job when the offseason kicks off. Recently, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tossed out a couple of “names to watch” for the Titans’ coaching job, and like McCoy, they’re both former failed NFL head coaches.

Specifically, Rapoport believes that current Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and current Steelers offensive coordinator (and former Titans OC) Arthur Smith could appeal to Tennessee’s GM Mike Borgonzi. Borgonzi previously worked with Nagy in Kansas City for a total of eight seasons, so they know each other quite well.

While several other candidates are sure to emerge throughout the course of the season, Nagy and Smith would bring a decent amount of NFL experience to the table.

Nagy led the Bears to a 34-31 record from 2018 to 2021 before giving way to Matt Eberflus. Meanwhile, Smith led the Falcons to a 21-30 record from 2021 to 2023. Smith is also a native of Memphis, Tennessee, and the opportunity to become an NFL head coach again, so close to home, could appeal strongly to the 43-year-old offensive mind.
