Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has officially signed a contract extension that will keep him at the Catalan club until 2029.

De Jong arrived at Barcelona from Eredivisie club Ajax in 2019 on a then-reported initial fee of €75m, and has since become a key player in the squad, winning six trophies, including two La Liga titles so far.

Several reports have suggested that De Jong's contract renewal talks were delayed earlier due to his former agent, Ali Dursun, who allegedly dissuaded the Dutchman from switching representatives.

De Jong's current agent, Sebastian Ledure, has now successfully led the negotiations, followed by the 28-year-old signing the extension in front of Barcelona president Joan Laporta and director of the Football Area, Deco, among other members of the club's hierarchy.

De Jong has made 267 appearances for Barcelona so far, during which he has recorded 19 goals and 24 assists. Following the contract extension, the midfielder shared his thoughts on staying at his dream club 'as long as possible.'

"As I've always said, since I was a child, I dreamed of playing for Barcelona — and now that I'm living this dream, I want to stay here as long as possible and win many titles with this club," as per GOAL.

"I haven't yet won the Champions League with Barcelona, and this is a big goal for me and the team. We also want to win all possible titles — more league championships, cups, and the Super Cup. We will try to achieve that."

De Jong also heaped praise on Barca head coach Hansi Flick and his impact, and added,

"My relationship with the manager has been good from the first moment. He has always said that he believes in me, and he has shown that. I can improve many things and I will keep working like always."

De Jong and Barcelona are now headed to face Girona in their next La Liga clash on October 18 at Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium.
