SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The No. 2 Wall Hawks have overcome slow starts and become road warriors this season.
The Wall Hawks (6-0 overall, 1-0 in district) are one of just a few unbeaten teams remaining in the Concho Valley. The Hawks have soared up to this point, and their biggest challenge yet awaits in week eight at Coahoma. Wall is ranked second in the state once again, after its dominant 63-13 win over Merkel to begin district play. Despite such a lopsided score, it didn’t come easily for Wall at first. The Hawks turned the ball over on the opening play, which led to an ensuing Merkel touchdown to open the scoring. After a slow start, the Hawks steamrolled their way to a 50-point win.
The Hawks are set to hit the road for the fifth time this season, and first against a district opponent in the Coahoma Bulldogs. Winning a road district game is never an easy task, but road trips are nothing new to head coach Craig Slaughter and his team, who have embraced becoming ‘road warriors.’
“We have been road warriors this year,” Slaughter said. “There’s only been one time I thought we didn’t start great, so there may be something about the road, that bus trip, or whatever helps us lock in. I’m hoping that again, you see it from the jump that we’re locked in and good to go.”
Wall athletes have embraced the road trips and slow starts as well.
“We’ve started slow lately, but we’ve picked it up especially in the second half,” Wall running back Brady Neal said.
“We treat every week like it’s the same,” Wall quarterback Landon York said. “Each opponent’s going to get our full attention, whether they’re on the road or at home.”
Wall’s week eight game at Coahoma kicks off at 7 p.m. CST at Bill Easterling Memorial Stadium in Coahoma, Texas.
