Peter Schmeichel was left perplexed by Manchester United’s decision to offload Rasmus Hojlund after bringing in essentially a like-for-like replacement in the form of Benjamin Sesko.

The Red Devils officially bid farewell to Hojlund on deadline day last month when he completed a season-long loan move to Napoli.

At the end of the campaign, the reigning Serie A champions will have to sign him permanently for a fee of £38 million, provided they qualify for the Champions League.

Even if it were an option over an obligation clause, you’d imagine Napoli would be adamant about keeping hold of him based on how he’s fared thus far.

In his first six appearances for the club, the 22-year-old has returned four goals – two in the league and two in the Champions League. Such stellar form has continued over to his international duties, where he has returned five goal contributions in his last three outings for Denmark.

During his United tenure, he once went 17 months without finding the back of the net for his nation.

In regard to how Sesko has fared, he’s halfway to levelling Hojlund’s Premier League goal return of 2024/2025 (four) in his opening seven appearances, scoring in back-to-back games prior to the break.

Alas, you could certainly put a case forward that some players are simply more suited to the English top flight whilst others struggle to really get to grips with the league. Just because Hojlund is excelling now doesn’t mean he’d be doing so had he stayed put at Old Trafford

Schmeichel, however, has backed his compatriot in the situation, insisting United should’ve stuck with what they had rather than shelling out the big bucks for Sesko.

“The signing of Sesko was a bit weird to me,” the ex-shot-stopper declared on the BBC’s Sacked in the Morning podcast. “We had Hojlund, starved of service for two years. You only need to see what he is doing now at Napoli with Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay to play with.

“I have consistently said Hojlund will be a 25-goal-a-season striker, but he needs service. At the time, we brought [Matheus] Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo in – players who would give Hojlund first-class service.

“We spent £70m or so on Sesko [but] we don’t have that number six we should have.”
