Chelsea aren’t in the market for a goalkeeper and aren’t thinking about returning for Mike Maignan according to reports.

The Blues made six first team signings in the summer, but much to the disappointment of supporters a new goalkeeper didn’t arrive.

Instead Chelsea opted to stick with their options of Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, whilst they sent youngster Mike Penders on loan to Strasbourg.

Chelsea not currently planning to return for Mike Maignan

The decision not to sign a new goalkeeper hasn’t gone down well, with Sanchez getting a costly red card against Manchester United, whilst Jorgensen really struggled against Lincoln in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea had the opportunity to sign Maignan in the summer, but weren’t prepared to get close to AC Milan’s valuation.

Maignan will have six months left on his contract in January, and there’s been reports Chelsea could look to return for the Frenchman in the new year.

However, Mail Sport have reported Chelsea aren’t planning to return for Maignan, and aren’t currently in the market for a senior goalkeeper.

Maignan is likely to attract interest from a number of clubs with his contract expiring, but as things stand it appears Chelsea aren’t interested in adding him to their ranks.

Mike Penders future number one?

Reportedly Penders is a big reason why Chelsea aren’t looking to sign a keeper, and the 20-year-old is currently impressing at Strasbourg.

Chelsea are said to view Penders as special, and it seems clear they see the Belgian as the club’s long term number one.

When Penders is ready to make the step-up is the big question, and it’s a decision Chelsea can’t afford to get wrong.

Supporters will no doubt be keeping an eye on his progress this season, but even if he does well, next season would seem to soon to hand him the number one shirt at Stamford Bridge.
