Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has made African football history by joining an elite club after netting a sensational four-goal haul against Gambia in the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang enters the history books

According to statistics published by FIFA's official website after the African qualifiers, the Olympique de Marseille star becomes just the seventh player ever to score four goals in a single match in the entire history of Africa’s World Cup qualifiers.

Before Aubameyang, six other players had achieved this remarkable feat:

  • Roger Milla, the legendary Cameroonian, who netted four against Kenya in 1981.
  • Francileudo Santos, the Tunisian sharpshooter, who dazzled against Malawi in 2005.
  • Faneva Andriatsima, the Malagasy striker, who scored four against Comoros in 2007.
  • Emmanuel Adebayor, the Togolese international, who bagged four against Swaziland (now Eswatini) in 2008.
  • Islam Slimani, who matched the feat against Djibouti in 2021.
  • And finally, Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian superstar, delivered a brilliant "super hat-trick" against Djibouti in 2023.

It’s also worth noting that Gabon’s Panthers have qualified for the African World Cup play-offs, after finishing among the four best second-placed teams in their group.
