It’s fair to say that Justin Fields is coming off his worst start as the New York Jets‘ starting quarterback. He completed just 9-of-17 passes for 45 yards and took nine sacks for a loss of 55 yards.

But Fields also suffered an injury earlier this season, one that prevented him from starting in Week 3. That gave way to 36-year-old veteran journeyman Tyrod Taylor.

Taylor handled himself well. He’d complete 26-of-36 passes for 197 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. The Jets would lose to the Buccaneers by just three points.

While Taylor surely bought himself a few extra fans inside the Jets’ locker room, according to SNY’s Connor Hughes, some team members felt like Taylor should have been the starter all along.

“Several within the locker room have told SNY, at varying points beginning in training camp, they believe Taylor is their best quarterback.”

Fields is the former first-round pick, and he’s still just 26 years old. It’s not hard to understand why the Jets felt like he may have some untapped potential.

Fields did look improved as a member of the Steelers, albeit in limited time last season. He managed to lead Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record while completing a career-high 65.8% of his passes. He also had an impressive TD to INT ratio of 5 to 1.

Yet, this year is off to a much different start now that he’s been handed the starting job. Fields has yet to win a game, he’s still completing a respectable 65% of his passes. Plus, Fields also has a strong TD to INT ratio, throwing four touchdowns to zero interceptions.

But again, the Jets are 0-5 when Fields starts, and they have the NFL’s 25th-ranked scoring offense. That’s simply not good enough.
