The Cleveland Browns will be riding their rookie quarterbacks the rest of the way this season, for better or for worse.
Rookie Dillon Gabriel has started two games thus far and has been unimpressive in both. The former Oregon Duck has completed 57.3% of his passes for 430 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.
Some have wondered when Cleveland's other rookie, Shedeur Sanders, may get a chance to prove himself. However, one Browns insider isn't so sure Sanders will fare any better.
Mary Kay Cabot believes Shedeur Sanders will struggle the same way Dillon Gabriel has been
Mary Kay Cabot, Browns reporter for Cleveland.com, thinks the Browns' offensive struggles aren't necessarily because of quarterback play, but because of the offense as a whole.
"Question is, would Sanders fare any better? With so many issues on the unit, it would probably be just as tough sledding for him as it’s been for Gabriel, and as it was for Flacco. The one area where Sanders would have Gabriel beat is in accuracy," Cabot wrote.
"But with this offense struggling in almost every aspect — except perhaps the running game when the defense allows it — Sanders might be thrown to the wolves and set up for a world of hurt in his first few starts if he’s not ready…. But it’s turbulent cockpit right now for a Browns rookie quarterback, whether his name is Gabriel or Sanders."
It's a fair point from Cabot, as the Browns, outside of Quinshon Judkins and a few veterans on the offensive line, don't have much to work with offensively.
The wide receiver room leaves more to be desired, with Jerry Jeudy the only proven veteran among the bunch.
It's fair to question if throwing Sanders out there would lead to a higher-functioning offense.
