In a vote that ended Oct. 17, Cincinnati.com readers selected the first 2025-2026 Cincinnati Enquirer/Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Oct. 12.
Here are this week's winners.
Ohio big-school football team: Kings – Kings matched their best offensive output of the season in a 49-14 win over Milford.
Ohio small-school football team: Cincinnati Country Day – The Nighthawks are on a six-game winning streak after a 33-0 win at Norwood.
Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team: Newport Central Catholic – The Firemen’s Bell trophy remains with the Thoroughbreds for the 26th consecutive year, as they defeated Newport 26-6.
Ohio boys fall team: Little Miami cross country – The Panthers won the Eastern Cincinnati Conference championship for the second-straight season, clinching with a 68 at the conference meet.
Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys fall team: Dixie Heights soccer – Dixie Heights won the 34th District title with a 2-1 win over St. Henry.
Ohio girls fall team: East Clinton volleyball – The Astros swept Wilmington on Oct. 6 to improve to 19-2 for the season.
Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls fall team: East Central soccer – The Trojans won their sectional title, beating Greenfield-Central 5-0 in the semifinals and New Palestine 1-0 in the finals.
Ohio boys cross-country runner: Dom Ellis, St. Xavier - He led the Bombers to a 15th-straight GCL-South title by winning the individual title in 15:39.5.
Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross-country runner: Mason Fields, St. Henry – The sophomore helped the Crusaders win the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference DII team title with a ninth-place finish in 17:59.4.
Ohio girls cross-country runner: Rian Helton, Western Brown – The freshman won the overall Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference title with a time of 20:36.1.
Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross-country runner: Abigail Ford, Villa Madonna – She took fourth place at the NKAC DII meet with a new personal best of 20:09.9.
Field hockey: Mamie Maringer, Summit Country Day – On Senior Night, Maringer shifted seamlessly around the field while moving from defense to midfield to attacker. She helped the team rally to force a double overtime game, tying the match with 28 seconds left in regulation.
Ohio big-school football: Mason Chumbley, Elder – He had a game-changing 83-yard interception return for a score late in the first half, and added five tackles on defense in the Panthers’ 40-16 win over Highlands.
Ohio small-school football: Jayden Murray, Clark Montessori – Despite the team’s 27-18 loss to North College Hill, he had five interceptions on defense.
Northern Kentucky/Indiana football: Jack Stevie, Newport Central Catholic – He caught three passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns and snagged an interception in a rivalry win over Newport.
Boys golfer: Charlie Straubel, Anderson – Straubel placed fifth with a 69 at the Division I district tournament, helping Anderson advance to state with a runner-up finish.
Girls golfer: Ellie Hartung, Madeira – The sophomore shot a 71 in the shortened Division II state meet, tying for second place by one shot while helping Madeira to a runner-up finish.
Ohio big-school boys soccer: Brody Sucher, Kings – The senior had the shutout in goal in a 0-0 draw with Turpin that clinched a tie for the Eastern Cincinnati Conference title.
Ohio small-school boys soccer: Caden Lewis, Deer Park – The junior scored three goals in a 7-2 win over Felicity-Franklin.
Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys soccer: Logan Thoss, St. Henry – He was named to the all-tournament team in the 34th District after scoring two goals in the semis against Villa Madonna, and one in the final against Dixie Heights.
Ohio big-school girls soccer: Leah Crosby, Ursuline - She had one goal and two assists in a pair of wins this week
Ohio small-school girls soccer: Hannah Thompson, Fenwick – She scored the team’s goal in a 1-1 draw with Chaminade-Julienne that snapped the team’s 25-game losing streak in the GCL-Coed.
Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls soccer: Tessa Schmidt, Dixie Heights – The senior scored the winning goal in overtime in a 1-0 win over St. Henry in the 34th District final.
Girls singles tennis: Renee Harper, Oak Hills – The sophomore qualified for state by taking third place in the Division I singles district tournament.
Girls doubles tennis: Saanvi Reddy-Adriana Moreno, Mason – The junior and senior knocked off the defending state champions and fellow Mason Comets to win the Division I doubles district tournament.
Ohio big-school girls volleyball: Timaya Crooks, Princeton – She had 11 kills, four aces and a passing average of 2.5 in a win over Purcell Marian, then had 12 kills, eight digs, three aces and two blocks in a win over West Clermont.
Ohio small-school girls volleyball: Brooklyn Sandlin, New Miami – She led the Vikings to a five-set win over Tri-County North with 19 assists, 18 digs and four kills.
Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls volleyball: Allie Ross, Simon Kenton – The sophomore had 23 digs, three aces and two digs in a win over Highlands, then contributed 20 digs, six aces and three digs in a sweep of Grant County.
Boys water polo: Aaron Zelvy, Sycamore – The junior recorded two full lines against Napoleon and Oakwood, scoring seven goals across the two games.
