HOLYOKE — Sports leaders at Holyoke Community College will retire a former student athlete’s jersey Saturday, two years after she was fatally shot at an intersection on Boston Road in Springfield.

Amanda Cummings, 31, of Agawam, was among those who perished. She was shot to death along with another driver in the car. Police have said Cummings was not the intended target.

Cummings had a storied history in local soccer leagues.

She was No. 7, a star defensive player.

She was a standout on the field, and in person, according to HCC soccer coach Rob Galazka.

“She had this infectious grin. She made everyone around her feel happy. Sometimes she wouldn’t, even have to say a word,” he said.

She was a two-time MVP, All American and team captain. She deserved it all, her coach said.

“She was just one of those top-notch kids. She was the fiercest players om the field,” he added.

Off the field, however, Cummings was a kind soul, he said.

“She was just the kind of kid to make everyone happy, just because she was there.”

Galazka still remembers the phone call about Cummings’ death.

“It was horrifying. Of course, there is sadness but also feelings of anger,” he said.

A ceremony for the retirement of Cummings’ jersey will take place at the HCC Bartley Center around 3 p.m.
