Anderlecht do not want young star to go to the U17 World Cup

Speaking ahead of Anderlecht’s clash with Sint Truiden this weekend, the Mauves head coach Besnik Hasi was asked about the chances of midfielder Nathan De Cat going to the U17 World Cup to represent Belgium. As reported by HLN, Hasi was clear that Anderlecht would prefer De Cat to remain with the side to help them in the Pro League. During the press conference Hasi said ‘We want De Cat to stay here. I think he understands that. Whether the football association pressures us to release him after all, I’m not concerned with that’.

It has been reported that the talented young midfielder would like to go to the World Cup which will be taking place in Qatar next month. Furthermore, the Belgian FA is also said to be working on persuading Anderlecht to allow De Cat to go and represent his country in November. It is understandable why Anderlecht want De Cat to remain with them, given how well he has been performing in central midfield so far this season. However, it might also be worth thinking long term about the players own preferences and giving him an opportunity to play for his country at a World Cup could also aid his development as a player. Either way, De Cat looks to be the latest young talent to be coming out of the Anderlecht academy and one that will surely be linked with a move to a top European league in the coming seasons.

The 17-year-old De Cat has already played 15 games this season with one assist, many of which have been as a starter.
