Liverpool have the opportunity to create history on Sunday when Manchester United visit Anfield.

The two biggest clubs in England always demand the attention of the rest of the Premier League and clashes between the two are high-stakes. Fortunately, the Reds' form in recent years is really good.

Across the last 10 competitive fixtures in the rivalry, Liverpool have won five to United's two, with scorelines such as 4-2, 5-0, 4-0, 7-0 and 3-0. However, three of the last four games have resulted in draws, against perhaps the weakest United sides of all-time. Arne Slot will want to make amends.

Furthermore, the Reds aren't in good form throughout this season in general, losing each of their last three games before the international break. We need to stop the rut and really lay down a marker. In doing so, however, it's possible that Ruben Amorim might end up getting caught in the crossfire.

Is the writing on the wall for Amorim?

Of course, recent discourse about the Portuguese coach suggests that United are not looking to change the position for a while - Sir Jim Ratcliffe claimed Amorim might need to be given three years.

Given how poor the Red Devils have been over the last 12 months under him, it's truly bizarre that he could be backed so heavily despite failing to really turn around the club's form. However, the sheer amount of pressure on his shoulders will no doubt skyrocket if Liverpool can secure a thumping win.

The Reds have more than played their part in getting United managers sacked over the last 10 years.

Louis Van Gaal was dismissed at the end of the 2015/16 season, and just a few months earlier, Liverpool had beaten United in a two-legged Europa League quarter-final - a piece of silverware that might have saved the Dutchman, being snatched away by Jurgen Klopp in his first season with us.

You can also pinpoint Jose Mourinho's sacking in 2018 on the club, since he left United just two days after taking a 3-1 defeat at Anfield. Two daggers from Xherdan Shaqiri essentially decided his fate.

Three years later, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was on the brink when Liverpool travelled to Old Trafford in 2021 - the Reds left with all three points in a 5-0 statement win. You might remember Mohammed Salah netting a hat-trick in that game. Just three weeks on from the affair, the Norwegian left the club.

And while it's difficult to work out whether Liverpool played a role in Erik Ten Hag's sacking, since the 7-0 win at Anfield in 2023 was overlooked, the club's 3-0 win at Old Trafford in 2024 will no doubt have piled on the pressure. He was sacked eight weeks later, following continued poor form.

So in spite of what the general feeling might be regarding Amorim's position over in Manchester, it's clear that things can change in a flash. Liverpool are known to stepping up in the big occasions, and needing a win to get their campaign to retain the title back on track, a sacking might be inevitable.
