Shedeur Sanders was one of the biggest names heading into the 2025 NFL Draft, but it was there that his future outlook became apparent. Eventually, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns — but not before avoiding being selected by the Baltimore Ravens. That decision drew plenty of criticism.

“I think this is insane. ... At this point you're in the fifth round. I understand you had higher hopes, but you've dropped to the fifth round and you're thinking about being a starting quarterback the next year. I think this is incredibly shortsighted. ... You want to go to a good organization where you can develop and reach your potential,” Alex Smith said on Sunday NFL Countdown.

Now, Sanders is serving as the backup to fellow rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel. At some point, Sanders is expected to replace Gabriel.

“Dillon Gabriel is gonna play for the foreseeable future as long as he's healthy. I don't think there's any intention to play Shedeur until a certain point. We will see Shedeur but I never thought it would be before December,” The Athletic’s Akron Jackson said on air.

Even when Sanders does get his opportunity, Cleveland reporter Mary Kay Cabot made it clear that he won’t necessarily be a better option given the Browns’ current roster.

“But with this offense struggling in almost every aspect — except perhaps the running game when the defense allows it — Sanders might be thrown to the wolves and set up for a world of hurt in his first few starts if he’s not ready…. But it’s turbulent cockpit right now for a Browns rookie quarterback, whether his name is Gabriel or Sanders,” Cabot wrote.

This is the sad reality for Cleveland. The Browns are in a disastrous situation, and whoever takes over the offense isn’t likely to make it any better.

The team has two rookie quarterbacks and has set them up with virtually no chance at success. Sanders will eventually get his shot as the starter — but it’s going to come at a major cost.
