Ole Miss is reportedly working on a new contract extension with Lane Kiffin after a crazy week for college football coaches. James Franklin led the list after being fired by Penn State, along with Indiana's Curt Cignetti getting another pay bump and is now the third highest-paid in the nation.

This has prompted Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter to work proactively on a new deal with head football coach Lane Kiffin. As the Rebels continue their undefeated season, Kiffin’s name resurfaces on hot boards across the country.

Carter told On3 on Friday that discussions are underway with Kiffin’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, to secure a contract extension before the coaching carousel truly begins. “Of course I’ve been talking with Jimmy, and I’m going to be proactive with working out a deal,” Carter said. “I’d love to get something done like Indiana did with Cignetti before the silly season starts.”

Kiffin is currently the tenth highest-paid coach in college football, according to USA TODAY Sports. That ranks him fifth among SEC coaches. Sexton is reportedly aiming to make Kiffin the highest-paid coach in the country, per On3’s Ben Garrett.

“You’re always listening and looking… and that’s been a common theme in my life,” Kiffin said. “I think I view that much differently now.”

The fifth-ranked Rebels are off to a 6-0 start ahead of Saturday’s showdown at No. 9 Georgia. Under Kiffin, Ole Miss has reached five consecutive bowl games, including two New Year’s Six appearances, and he recently became the fastest coach in program history to 50 wins (50-18 in 68 games). The focus has shifted from chasing opportunities to appreciating the program he’s built in Oxford.

“I believe Lane’s happy here,” Carter said. “But you never know what can happen with coaches.”

Ole Miss travels to Athens to face Georgia (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC).
