Leeds United Open Talks For French U20 International: Why He Could Soon Become The ‘Number 1’

If a recent report from the French outlet L’Equipe is believed to be true, Leeds United are keeping close tabs on Lisandru Olmeta and have contacted the OLSC Lille custodian’s entourage in an attempt to secure his services. But they are not alone in the hunt, with Serie A outfit Parma also keen on snapping up the youngster, who joined the Ligue 2 outfit SC Bastia this summer on a season-long loan.

The France U20 international progressed through the academy ranks of AS Monaco before being roped in by Lille a couple of years ago. They sanctioned his temporary transfer to the Lions of Furiani for first-team minutes. However, the goalkeeping prodigy has yet to make an appearance, even though Bastia are rock-bottom in the Ligue 2 standings.

But he grabbed the attention with the Blueberries, who enjoyed a strong run in the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup. While they were knocked out by Morocco in the semi-finals following a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, Olmeta impressed throughout the campaign, depicting his calmness and composure.

Why Leeds United Must Bring Him In As Meslier’s Successor

Leeds United have assessed the French market extensively over the years, particularly for goalkeepers, with Lucas Perri being the latest arrival from Lyon on a high-profile transfer. Illan Meslier also joined from Lorient in 2019, but could leave in January after more than 200 appearances for the West Yorkshire side. Despite being their ‘number 1’ till last season, the Frenchman has now been demoted as the third-choice behind Perri and Karl Darlow.

Having failed to stake a claim in Daniel Farke’s plans, Meslier is expected to part ways in the winter in search of regular gametime. Darlow would challenge and cover Perri between the sticks, but the Whites must bring in a replacement, who would join as the third-choice with a view to securing a first-team status in due course of time.

Leeds raided Lille in the summer when Gabriel Gudmundsson completed a £10m transfer to Elland Road from Stade Pierre-Mauroy. These two clubs might trade again in January for Olmeta if the English side are desperate to have Olmeta in their ranks. Although he has not experienced senior football so far in his career, the spell with France U20 could see Lille demand a significant fee for their prized asset.

Pascal Olmeta, his father, achieved greatness in goal with Marseille and Lyon during his playing days. Lisandru must decide now whether to ply his trade in England or stay in his homeland and wait for opportunities in the last line of defence.
