Inter eked out a precious 1-0 win at Roma in Saturday’s Serie A top-four six-pointer, taking advantage of Napoli’s slip-up to move to the top of the table. Ange-Yoan Bonny scored the winning goal in the sixth minute as the Nerazzurri extended their winning streak at the Stadio Olimpico to five matches.
After scoring and providing three assists in his first league start for Inter, Bonny got the chance to partner up with Lautaro Martinez again. The French striker seized the opportunity in the absence of Marcus Thuram to strengthen his first-team prospects with another crucial goal.
Roma nearly found an equalizer only six minutes later, yet Bryan Cristante’s header flew a whisker wide of the post. Roma continued to create chances after the break. However, Yann Sommer was unbeatable tonight, making a vital stop to deny Paulo Dybala from a promising position at the start of the second half.
Both sides had a couple of decent chances for the rest of the game, but the scoreline remained intact. Without further ado, let’s look at our Inter ratings.
Inter (3-5-2)
Yann Sommer – 8/10
Back to the starting XI after two matches, the Swiss goalkeeper repaid Cristian Chivu’s trust with three pivotal saves, including the abovementioned stop to thwart Dybala’s close-range attempt.
Alessandro Bastoni – 7/10
After facing criticism during the international break, the Italian star returned to his best, performing outstandingly against Matias Soule. Calm and collected on the ball as ever.
Francesco Acerbi – 8/10
It was another convincing performance from the aging center-back as he dominated his opponents in the air while keeping his tackles clean and well-timed.
Manuel Akanji – 7/10
Like his center-back colleagues, the Manchester City loanee held up his end of the bargain tonight, though one lapse of concentration allowed Dybala to go one-on-one with Sommer.
Denzel Dumfries – 7/10
In addition to a rock-solid defensive display, the Dutch wingback nearly doubled Inter’s lead at the start of the second half, only for Mile Svilar to pull off a superb save to deny his thunderous attempt.
Nicolo Barella – 8/10
After several sub-standard showings, the diminutive midfielder showed his class this evening, bossing the middle of the park with his trademark runs and energy.
Hakan Calhanoglu – 7/10
With Barella doing the heavy lifting, the Turkish playmaker had all the freedom to dictate the tempo with his pinpoint passing and exceptional vision.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 7/10
Despite wasting a late chance to kill the game off, the Armenian veteran delivered another composed performance, linking midfield and attack with intelligence and experience
Federico Dimarco – 6/10
It was a relatively quiet night for the highly-rated wingback. Inter often lacked his signature runs down the flank, while his set-piece deliveries were frequently off the mark.
Lautaro Martinez – 6/10
Whether fatigue kicked in or he didn’t have his night, yet El Toro was merely a shadow of a player who terrorized Serie A defenses before the international break.
Ange-Yoan Bonny – 9/10
The 21-year-old stole the spotlight again, expertly avoiding the offside trap before beating Svilar at the near post to seal a morale-boosting victory for Inter.
Substitutes
Francesco Pio Esposito – 6/10
Davide Frattesi – 7/10
Petar Sucic – 6/10
