No. 13 Notre Dame got huge performances from its star running backs in a rainy 34-24 win over No. 20 USC Saturday night.

Jeremiyah Love rushed 24 times for 228 yards and a touchdown, while Jadarian Price had 13 carries for 87 yards and added a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second half.

But even with Love and Price being nearly unstoppable, it still took a couple of baffling plays by USC in the fourth quarter for Notre Dame to get the win.

As Notre Dame led 27-24 early in the fourth quarter, USC QB Jayden Maiava found Makai Lemon for a 42-yard pass to get USC to the Notre Dame 37-yard line. On the next play, coach Lincoln Riley called a pass play. But it wasn’t for Maiava to throw the ball. Instead, Lemon had the option to pass, and as he went to the sidelines, he didn’t throw the ball before he got hit and fumbled.

Notre Dame recovered. Seven plays later, CJ Carr’s one-yard run extended the lead to 10.

As rain increased during the Trojans' next possession, USC needed about a foot on fourth down. Instead of running the ball up the middle or even running a QB sneak, Maiava was asked to roll out. No one was open and he fired an incomplete pass.

With those drives sandwiched by Maiava interceptions, each of USC’s final four possessions ended in either a turnover or a turnover on downs.
