Danish tennis player Holger Rune confirmed on Sunday that he has ruptured his Achilles tendon which will require surgery and sideline him for many months.
World number 11 Rune sustained the injury in the second set of his semi-final at the Stockholm Open on Saturday against French player Ugo Humbert.
Rune had to abandon the match and his mother had already suggested post-match to Danish radio that the left Achilles was torn, and Rune saying he actually heard it pop.
Rune confirmed this on Sunday via Instagram after examinations in Monaco, saying: "My Achilles is full broken on the proximal part meaning I need operation already next week and from here rehabilitation.
"It’s gonna be a while before I can step on court again. It’s tough. I had so much joy on court in Stockholm and it’s unbearable to think that I will not feel this energy for some time now."
Well-wishes from past greats such as Boris Becker and the current generation soon arrived but the injury also highlighted player concerns over the big physical demand.
“Injuries are going to happen ... we are pushing our bodies to do things they aren’t supposed to in elite sport," Briton Jack Draper, himself out for the rest of the year, said on X.
“We have so many incredible younger guys on the tour right now and I’m proud to be apart of that, however, the tour and the calendar have to adapt if any of us are gonna achieve some sort of longevity.”
American Taylor Fritz said on the same platform: "Facts, also seeing more injuries and burnout now than ever before because balls, courts, conditions have slowed down a lot making the weekly grind even more physically demanding and tough on the body.
