Florida fired head coach Billy Napier on Sunday, a day after a 23-21 win over Mississippi State, according to a report by ESPN.
The Gators improved to 3-4, but questionable playcalling and offensive stumbles put Napier’s out in Gainesville. The final straw came when fans booed him off the field despite a game-saving interception by defensive lineman Michai Boireau in the closing seconds. They also chanted "Fire Billy" for the third time this year.
Napier finishes 22-23 overall and 12-16 in SEC play. His 5-17 record against ranked teams was a huge deciding factor. He repeatedly resisted giving up playcalling duties, even as Florida’s offense sputtered behind injured freshman quarterback DJ Lagway.
Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin made the call, ending a tenure many felt dragged on too long. Receivers coach Billy Gonzales is expected to serve as interim coach until the end of the season.
Florida owes Napier about $21 million in buyout payments, with half due before Nov. 18, and the remaining balance spread over the remaining years of his contract. This adds to a growing coaching tab that still includes Dan Mullen’s salary.
Florida's next head coach will have to bring the program back to competing in SEC play and nationally.
