A young reporter remarkably kept her cool and poise when out-of-control college kids did their best to disrupt her live shot on Saturday night.
Olivia Cleary reported for ABC affiliate KEZI in Eugene, OR, Sunday, as Oregon State took on Lafayette.
Brett Austin Taylor, sports director for KEZI, posted a clip of Cleary’s live shot to X, writing, “Sometimes it’s a tough job reporting live.”
“You can definitely tell there is a new play-caller in town,” Cleary began as a group of students swarmed around her shouting, and one put his face right up to the camera.
Cleary didn’t miss a beat, smiling, and telling the meddler, “One second,” before she continued on as boys shouted behind her.
“The offense is looking a lot more versatile…we’ve seen a lot more passes from Maalik Murphy to Trent Walker,” Cleary managed as one of the boys yelled, “Six seven!” (shouting out the internet meme that doesn’t seem to have a meaning) and another, with what appeared to be a beer in his hand, inexplicably screamed, “Help! Help me!” over and over.
Another yelled, “Stop!” while waving his hand in front of the camera, and several people could be seen rolling around on the ground behind Cleary.
Taylor Rozantz, Oregon State’s head academic counselor and assistant director posted, “Her ability to remain poised and professional deserves significant praise. The students’ conduct was completely unacceptable. Disappointing.”
One Oregon fan remarked, “What a joke,” while calling Cleary “a true professional.”
Another wrote, “She needs to be hired to a major company immediately. This was unbelievable composure.”
Yet another flagged Oregon State University directly, writing, “@OregonState you let these type of people into your school?”
By the end of the day, ESPN reported that Oregon State overtook Lafayette 45-13, writing, “Oregon State (1-7), snapped an eight-game losing streak dating to last season. The Beavers finished with 365 yards rushing and five touchdowns, their most since 2016…”
The university hasn’t commented in an official capacity.
