Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix will remain at the Circuit of the Americas through at least 2034 after a new long-term arrangement was reached.

COTA, located on the outskirts of Austin, Texas, has been the host of the United States Grand Prix since 2012, absent only in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Its current deal was set to expire after 2026, but a long-term agreement was always a formality, and Formula 1 has confirmed that COTA will be part of the schedule through 2034.

“Since 2012 the United States Grand Prix has continued to grow in strength and popularity, and I want to thank the City of Austin and Travis County for hosting us,” Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said.

“Each year, the event at the Circuit of the Americas stands out as a true highlight for fans, drivers, and teams alike, drawing hundreds of thousands of passionate supporters who come to witness the thrilling on-track action and soak up the vibrant energy of the circuit and the city.

“As Formula 1 continues to grow and thrive in the United States, we are proud to extend our partnership with Bobby Epstein and his outstanding team in Austin, as well as with Governor Abbott, whose leadership has been instrumental in supporting the sport’s development in Texas and beyond. Both have shown unwavering commitment to F1, and their shared vision and investment have played a vital role in establishing the strong foundation we now enjoy in the US.”

Formula 1’s forever US home

Formula 1 had long striven to find a home in the US, and the purpose-built COTA ticked all of the boxes when it joined the schedule in 2012, which ended the sport’s five-year absence from the country.

There were a few rocky years for COTA but Formula 1’s boom in popularity in the country, particularly post-pandemic, has now established the US Grand Prix among the most popular events on the calendar.

Attendance for the four-day event is now alongside the leading grands prix on the calendar, with a peak of 440,000 spectators in 2022.

The length of the deal means Austin will eventually surpass Watkins Glen as the venue to have hosted the most grands prix in the country.

“We’re glad Formula 1 has found a home in Texas, and are grateful to the fans, teams, and the entire F1 community who have consistently supported us and made the United States Grand Prix a favorite stop on the global calendar,” said COTA Chairman Bobby Epstein.

“Equally, we’re proud of—and appreciate—the people of Central Texas who have been such welcoming hosts! With this contract, COTA will overtake Watkins Glen as the longest serving Formula 1 track in the United States. Thanks to the great support and a wonderful host city, the United States Grand Prix has grown to be one of the world’s biggest single weekend sporting events—with an unrivaled annual economic impact.”

The new contract solidifies the long-term future of all three US-based events on the calendar, with Austin having been joined by Miami in 2022, and Las Vegas in 2023.

Las Vegas’ grand prix has a contract through 2032—albeit with clauses—while Miami signed a long-term deal earlier this year through 2041.

Several other grands prix have also received long-term extensions in recent months, with Azerbaijan (2030), Monaco (2035), and Austria (2041) all signing lengthy deals this year.
