An interesting Milwaukee Brewers rumor offers up a perfect backup option if the New York Mets’ pursuit of a Tarik Skubal trade fails.

During the Mets’ stunning September collapse, one thing became apparent. While they have talented young pitchers ready to make an impact now in Nolan McLean, Brandon Sproat, and Jonah Tong, they badly need a front-line ace that can stop losing streaks when they arise. Well, one of the best in the game could be available this winter.

There have been rumblings over the last week that the Detroit Tigers could consider trading Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal this winter. He is heading into the final year of his rookie contract in 2026, and agent Scott Boras will look to make him the highest-paid pitcher of all time. The Mets will surely inquire about a trade. But the asking price for the young superstar could be astronomical.

Since the Tigers will ask for the proverbial king’s ransom, they must have other players on their wish list in case Detroit’s asking price becomes unrealistic. And an interesting secondary option to get the Mets the ace they need, reportedly, could be acquired this offseason.

Can Freddy Peralta be Tarik Skubal backup option for Mets?

According to The Athletic’s Andy McCullough, “the Brewers are expected to at least field offers for starting pitcher Freddy Peralta.”

The pitcher is in the final year of a $15.5 million extension. While they are likely in no rush to move their ace, he is making just $8 million next season and will be looking for a big raise in 2026 after earning All-Star honors for the second time this past season. Milwaukee is a small-market club and is sure to lose him once he hits the open market after next season.

  • Freddy Peralta stats: 17-6 Record, 2.70 ERA, 1.075 WHIP, 204 SO, 66 BB

The Mets have one of the best farm systems in baseball. They will certainly have quite a few young prospects ready for the big league in 2026 that will interest the Brewers. Furthermore, President David Stearns has deep connections to the franchise, and that could play a key role in getting a deal done. Peralta is only 29 years old.
