Why Falcons' 40 JD Bertrand's helmet looks different than his Atlanta teammates

There's a very good reason for this.

JD Bertrand is a promising young linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons.

He's also easy to notice out on the field, and not just because he wears the number 40 on his jersey, but because of his unique helmet.

It's not actually a fully different helmet, but rather a cover on his traditional helmet.

And there's a very good reason for that.

Why is JD Bertrand's helmet different?

The Atlanta Falcons' linebacker JD Bertrand has a different-looking helmet to protect his head from injury.

He's wearing a Guardian Cap.

It's a soft-shell cover that goes over the standard helmet. It's meant to reduce concussions and head injuries.

Bertrand missed three games due to a concussion in 2024, his rookie NFL season with the Falcons.

Guardian Caps were first allowed to be worn on NFL practice fields in 2020.

The first time players could wear Guardian Caps in games was 2024.

Bertrand didn't miss a beat on wearing the safety covering.

It's worn currently by less than 15 players in the entire NFL, but it has grown slowly.

It seems safe to expect it will continue to be worn by more players as time goes on.
