FISHER, Ill. (WCIA) — Fisher High School freshman and baseball player Colt Daugherty finished top-5 in a national baseball competition, earning himself an expenses-paid trip to game two of the World Series.
It was part of the MLB’s Pitch, Hit and Run contest, which tests 50,000 young athletes’ skills every summer. Last year, Daugherty fell just short of winning, giving him a chip on his shoulder.
“I really wanted to make it, especially since this year is my last year,” Colt said. “I have a batting cage in my backyard. I’m putting in the work everyday doing what I can to get better.”
This year, his hard work paid off. A flight, hotel room, tickets and meals during his trip to the World Series are all paid for. Plus, he gets access to the field before the game.
“They’re doing batting practice Saturday before the actual game,” said his father, Chase Daugherty. “Then a team lunch and then we go to the World Series game that night, game two.”
Chase is also Colt’s coach. He said watching his son compete at MLB stadiums in the past — like Chicago’s Wrigley and Rate Fields — doesn’t disappoint.
“That is awesome,” Chase said. “I ask him after every one, I’m like, ‘Is that what you want? You want to be on that field the rest of your life?’ Every time he’s like, ‘Yeah.’ So, it’s fun. It’s amazing.”
With Colt’s aspirations of becoming a major leaguer, the stage doesn’t get much bigger than taking batting practice hours before Shohei Ohtani.
“I feel like I finally made it,” said Colt. “That feeling, I can’t even comprehend what it’d feel like.”
