The Giants' running back is ahead of schedule after his brutal injury.
Giants rookie Cam Skattebo took his first step toward an NFL return on Wednesday.
In a video posted on Instagram, Skattebo recorded himself walking into the Giants’ practice facility on his own — no walking boot or scooter in sight.
“Man, walking into the facility on my own two feet. God is good, man,” Skattebo says, via X/Twitter. “Just want to say thank you to everybody that supported. We getting back to it, let’s go!”
In a candid interview with N3on on Bleacher Report in November, Skattebo didn’t sugarcoat the damage of his injury.
He explained that the injury started with a broken fibula, and the impact set off a chain reaction. The ligament connecting his lower leg to his ankle tore, and with the bone no longer holding anything in place, his ankle fully dislocated, twisted nearly 90 degrees. Another key tendon that stabilizes the two lower-leg bones snapped as well.
To repair everything, doctors inserted what Skattebo called a “tightrope” — drilling through the bones and threading a stabilizing cord that pulls everything back together. The idea, he said, is that once that tightrope is in place, it’s nearly impossible to tear again, even in an injury as severe as the one he just endured.
Before his injury, Skattebo provided a spark for the Giants’ run game, rushing for 410 yards on 101 attempts (4.1 yards per carry) and had five rushing touchdowns. He also caught 24 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns.
