Academy graduate Nico O'Reilly scored his first UEFA Champions League goal to kickstart a superb 2-1 comeback victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
City hit back to win Champions League thriller at Real Madrid
The hosts made an electric start and came close to an opener twice inside the first seven minutes, firstly through Federico Valverde’s deflected free-kick which went just wide, before Vinicius Junior flicked off target under heavy pressure from onrushing City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Shortly before the half-hour mark, they did take the lead, with winger Rodrygo striking low and hard into the bottom left corner to claim his first goal since March and fifth in nine appearances against City.
However, 10 minutes before the interval, we fought back and levelled thanks to O’Reilly’s first ever Champions League goal, prodding in from close-range after Josko Gvardiol’s header was parried by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
We completed the turnaround from the penalty spot shortly before the interval after Haaland was wrestled to the ground by Antonio Rudiger. Our talisman stepped up to stroke in his 55th career goal in the competition in his 54th appearance.
The hosts emerged from the break with attacking intensity and almost levelled after a stunning team move saw the ball end at Jude Bellingham’s feet inside the box, but the Englishman’s ambitious dinked effort sailed over.
We remained organised and competitive for the remainder of the encounter to claim our first victory at Bernabeu since 2020, taking us to 13 points from six games in the League Phase of the Champions League, keeping our top-eight hopes in our own hands.
