CJ Bailey will be playing for NC State in the Gasparilla Bowl next Friday, which is excellent news all around. The nightmare scenario would have been his opting out, not just for State’s chances against Memphis, but what that would obviously imply about his future in Raleigh.

He offered a diplomatic answer to a question about that today.

Home for Bailey, in case you’ve forgotten, is Miami. Hurricanes players probably spent half of their blowout win over NC State last month trying to recruit him. Following the bowl game, he’ll have two weeks to contemplate what he wants to do before the transfer portal opens. And there is no spring window anymore, remember, so at least we’ll have this matter settled one way or another soon.

I think Bailey genuinely likes being at NC State and State can roughly match Miami’s cap spending if it wants to, but Miami likely can offer more through NIL offers beyond that, which could be a difference maker. And by that I mean Miami could pay him $4 million, drawing out of their $20 million salary cap, but also promise another $4 million through its third-party collective. I would like to be clear that I am pulling those numbers out of thin air, but spending beyond the cap is already a standard for top programs.

I probably shouldn’t be doing this amount of unhealthy speculating. One game at a time! One roster development at a time!
