St. X announces plan for new multimillion-dollar football complex

A new St. X football complex will cost close to $9 million and is expected to be completed before the next school year.

One of Louisville's most impressive high school football programs will practice in a new complex next school year, following the announcement of a multimillion dollar project that has already begun.

Saint Xavier High, an all-boys private Catholic school, has broken ground on a new football complex that will cost nearly $9 million, President Paul Colistra told The Courier Journal on Dec. 11. The project is slated to be completed this summer, he said.

The center will be named after St. X alum Will Wolford, who coached the Tigers for five seasons from 2013 to 2017 after having spent 13 seasons in the NFL.

The idea behind the new center, Colistra said, came from classmates and friends of Wolford who came to the school's leadership with a lead gift.

The 11,000-square-foot facility will accommodate about 230 football players and will feature two locker rooms, meeting spaces, offices and storage areas. The school's wrestling center will also be located within the facility, and the school's outdoor stadium will also undergo significant upgrades. Those include a new turf field, a resurfaced track and a new video scoreboard, a release from the school states.

Colistra said the project is being fully funded through philanthropy, so parents will not see tuition increase or cuts at the school.

“It is with great appreciation to our board leadership and benefactors that we are able to provide a best-in-class facility for our students and student-athletes,” Colistra said in the release. “The timing couldn’t be better as we begin the search for the next leader of St. X Football."
