Report: NWSL board of governors approve new “High Impact Player” roster mechanism

According to Jeff Kassouf of ESPN, the NWSL board of governors have approved a new roster mechanism that would allow select star players to be paid above the current salary cap.

Behind the scenes, it has been dubbed “High Impact Player.” This would allow teams to spend up to $1 million over the salary cap on megastar players while only incurring a small portion of that salary as a cap hit.

The NWSLPA would still need to review it due to the current collective bargaining agreement, requiring consultation due to potential salary cap changes.

It is still unclear on what qualifications a player must check off to qualify for this. However, Kassouf mentions rankings on lists like the Ballon d’Or, appearances on the NWSL Best XI, or USWNT minutes earned (recent years). It also requires commercial benchmarks as well – which has not been clarified.

With the NWSL board convening next week for their end-of-the-year meeting, could this be done in time for Trinity Rodman to re-sign and remain with Washington Spirit, or is too late?

Nothing is finalized yet, but it does seem very close.
