Barcelona find themselves in an unexpectedly delicate situation with club captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The German goalkeeper is finally back at full fitness and available for selection, yet despite his status and long-standing influence in the dressing room, he is currently only the third-choice option under Hansi Flick.

It is a scenario few would have predicted even a year ago, and one that leaves both the player and the club facing difficult decisions.

Ter Stegen has been training with the squad for several weeks and has already been included in recent matchday lists.

Physically, he is ready to compete again, but his role within the team has changed dramatically.

Barcelona’s goalkeeping hierarchy has shifted this season, and barring further injuries, finding minutes for the German seems nearly impossible.

In fact, according to MARCA, this reality leaves Ter Stegen with just one logical path forward: searching for a new club.

It’s not that easy

The challenge, however, is that any departure will be complicated, as Barcelona are aware that selling Ter Stegen outright is virtually impossible in the current market.

He has not played regularly for a significant period, and no club is expected to invest heavily in a goalkeeper whose recent availability has been uncertain.

His market value has suffered, and clubs will be reluctant to commit to a substantial transfer fee without guarantees about his level upon return.

Financial factors further complicate the issue. Ter Stegen’s salary is among the highest in the squad, and few clubs around Europe would be willing to match those wages.

For that reason, Barcelona understand that a sale is unrealistic. A loan move, likely with Barça covering a large portion of his salary, is the only viable scenario being discussed internally.

Barcelona now await the next development, knowing that the future of their captain has become one of the most pressing dilemmas of the season.
