This Sunday, Daniele De Rossi and Cristian Chivu will face each other in the Serie A clash between Genoa and Inter Milan, bringing a rich history of friendship and shared experiences to the forefront.
As recalled by Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, it was De Rossi who in 2007 came to Chivu’s defence when the Romanian was booed by Roma fans.
Their bond extended off the pitch too, with the two living practically across the street from one another in the upper Torrino district.
Now, De Rossi is at Genoa while Chivu has returned to Milan in a managerial role, navigating the challenges of leading Inter after his playing career and countless encounters with his former Roma teammates.
The two have kept in touch over the years; De Rossi was even present at San Siro for Inter’s recent clash with Liverpool.
Genoa Vs Roma – De Rossi & Chivu Look Back On Fond Memories
CorSport notes that “the relationship, inevitably, after 18 years, is no longer the same, unlike with Kolarov, Chivu’s assistant and a point of reference for De Rossi in private life. The respect, however, remains, as do the affection and the memories.”
One anecdote that perfectly captures their youthful camaraderie occurred during a 2005 pre-season friendly against Panathinaikos.
“And you two,” Spalletti shouted from the sidelines, “we told you to stay calm,” half the stadium could hear.
Both barely in their twenties, it was already evident what kind of players, and people, they would become.
Sunday’s game at Marassi is more than just a tactical battle; it’s a reunion of two friends whose respect and shared history adds a unique layer to the fixture.
