Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes praised his side’s performance following their Rheinderby victory over 1. FC Köln, singling out Martin Terrier’s sensational scorpion kick as the moment that decided the match.
“I never managed to score something like that even once in training during my playing career,” Rolfes said with a laugh. “That goal was obviously the opener for us today. After that, playing football became noticeably easier for us.”
Before the breakthrough, Leverkusen had already created several opportunities, including a glaring chance for Malik Tillman, who was unable to convert when through on goal. Rolfes admitted surprise at the miss but showed understanding for the situation. “Normally Tillman scores that every time, but in that moment he couldn’t keep his composure. He tried to make it a bit too perfect.”
Rolfes stressed the importance of the victory, particularly after a difficult spell. “Today’s win was mandatory,” he said. “If you lose two games in a row, you simply have to win again - not only because it was a derby, but also to stay up near the top of the table.”
The Leverkusen executive also commented on the fan protests and solidarity shown before and during the match, admitting he had not anticipated such unity between rival supporters. “I wouldn’t have expected our fans to show solidarity with the Köln supporters,” Rolfes explained. “It was unfortunate that many fans weren’t able to take part today, but those who were there still created a good atmosphere. I won’t comment on rumours regarding the stadium entry situation.”
Looking ahead, Rolfes was quick to caution against complacency, with a major test awaiting. “The next game against Leipzig will be extremely difficult,” he added. “Leipzig have taken a very positive step in their development in recent months and weeks - it will definitely be an exciting match.”
With the derby behind them, Leverkusen will now turn their focus to maintaining momentum as they prepare for a demanding encounter against RB Leipzig.
