Liverpool only have one more chance to sign ‘excellent’ ace as major update emerges

Liverpool's first-team squad changed massively during the summer transfer window.

The Reds spent over £400 million trying to improve their ranks with players such as Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak being signed to replace Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

On the face of things, it felt like these were massive upgrades and exactly what Liverpool needed.

However, as the 2025-26 season got fully underway, it became clear how badly they needed defensive reinforcement, especially after Giovanni Leoni's injury.

Liverpool did try and rectify this issue by making a move for Marc Guehi on deadline day and although the Englishman completed his medical, Steve Parish chose against selling his captain in order to keep him around for their European run.

And, now that we're almost halfway through the campaign, the cost of not signing the centre-back is now being made more than clear, however, that could be about to change.

Bayern Munich are gearing up to approach Marc Guehi in the January transfer window

It's clear that Guehi's future lies away from Selhurst Park with Parish and Oliver Glasner both saying that he won't be extending his Crystal Palace contract.

The former Chelsea ace is among Palace's most important players with former England manager Lee Carsley even dubbing him an "excellent" player.

However, with the centre-back set to enter the final six months of his contract when the January window opens, he'll be able to talk to clubs outside of England about a potential transfer.

This is why Bayern are set to make a move for the centre-back, leaving Liverpool with just one more chance to entice him into an Anfield switch.

That is, according to a report from Sky Sports Germany journalist Patrick Berger who shared the following via his personal X account.

"FC Bayern remain interested in signing Marc Guehi (25) as free agent in summer," he wrote.

"From January 1, Max Eberl plans a personal exchange with Marc Guehi.

"Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool are in the race too for the center back."

The January transfer window could be Liverpool's last chance to sign Marc Guehi

There's no hiding from the fact that Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have been miles off the pace this season.

For the last couple of years, Van Dijk has been seen as one of the best centre-backs in the world but, after he extended his contract, he just hasn't been the same player.

Indeed, he may be 33 years old now and getting into the twilight stages of his career but the Dutchman shouldn't have had this much of a downfall in just a few short months.

Which is why, if Liverpool don't end up making a move for Guehi, it'll be a massive mistake on their behalf.

Of course, there's likely to be plenty of competition for his transfer and, if they do end up signing him in January, it could help Slot and his men get their campaign back on track.

Guehi has plenty of Premier League experience and with the Reds already having too many non-homegrown players as it is, signing the Englishman makes perfect sense.

Here's hoping that Richard Hughes and Slot can find some extra money in their war chest and strengthen their back line as soon as possible.
