Sunday Headlines: Kentucky Volleyball to Final Four and Basketball wins vs. Indiana

A great day to be a Wildcat.

Saturday was full of reasons for Kentucky Wildcats fans to celebrate, starting with Kentucky Volleyball’s triumphant sweep of Creighton in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals.

Craig Skinner’s No. 1 seed Wildcats took down No. 3 seed Creighton, 3-0, in what was a fun afternoon at Historic Memorial Coliseum.

Kentucky has lost just one set in NCAA Tournament play and will advance to the Final Four in Kansas City, where they will play the winner of Sunday’s match between No. 1 seed Texas and No. 3 seed Wisconsin.

The Wildcats defeated Texas 3-2 in a reverse sweep to win the Southeastern Conference Tournament and swept the Longhorns 3-0 in Austin during the regular season.

After UK Volleyball took care of business, Kentucky Basketball was just down the road at Rupp Arena, preparing to take on the Indiana Hoosiers for their first meeting since the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

Head coach Mark Pope and the Wildcats had yet to beat a Power Five team this season and desperately needed to show their fans that they could salvage their season.

Despite trailing at the half, Kentucky rallied back with toughness and grit to beat Indiana — 72-60.

Pope saw terrific performances from veteran players such as Jaland Lowe (13 points, five rebounds, two assists, and zero turnovers) and Mouhamed Dioubate (14 points, 12 rebounds, five steals, and zero turnovers on his birthday).

Otega Oweh added 10 points to round out double-figure scoring.

The win was a total team effort, which included Brandon Garrison making several impact plays in the second half that don’t necessarily jump out when looking at the box score, but certainly made a difference in swinging momentum.

Kentucky will look to build a winning streak next Saturday when they head to Atlanta to face Rick Pitino and St. John’s.
