Pat Fitzgerald Hires Two More Staff Members

New Chief of Staff and Strength & Conditioning Coach for MSU

New Michigan State football coach has reportedly secured his Chief of Staff and Strength and Conditioning Coach. Justin Thind has posted that Fitzgerald is bringing on Jacob Schmidt as Chief of Staff and Joel Welsh Jr. to lead Strength and Conditioning.

Schmidt comes from Northwestern where he served as Director of Football Operations and then worked with NU’s NIL collective.

As the post above indicates, Welsh was most recently Central Michigan’s Director of Sport Performance but has Big Ten experience with Iowa from 2012-2016.

Fitzgerald still has several key roles to fill, including naming an offensive coordinator. In addition to bringing on Schmidt and Welsh, Fitzgerald has:

  • Retained defensive coordinator Joe Rossi, who will be co-defensive coordinator with Max Bullough going forward.
  • Retained safeties coach James Adams.
  • Hired Bullough away from Notre Dame as co-DC and linebackers coach.
