Mainz squad is disappointed with the draw against Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich and the home crowd were taken aback by the execution of FSV Mainz 05 to heist a couple of goals from nowhere. While Bayern started strong and were the team in control, Mainz hardly felt the need to control the game to be in control of it. After seizing the second goal with a screaming header by Lee Jae-Song, Mainz looked to take the game away from Bayern along with their unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga this season. Harry Kane’s penalty pulled the home side out of the rut just in time to save the day for Kompany and co.

Let the draw sink in

Mainz defender Danny Da Costa and goalkeeper Batz expressed disappointment in the draw despite achieving their initially satisfactory expectation. Speaking post the game the duo commented on the result (via FC Bayern) and the resulting disappointment in not finishing the job. “It’s really difficult today. Before the game, I would have definitely liked to take a point from Munich. But when you’re leading 2-1 until the end, you obviously want to take all three points. That’s why I’m still a bit disappointed, but I think I’ll see it differently tomorrow,” said Da Costa.

Annoying to not win after gaining the lead

Goalkeeper Daniel Batz had a crucial outing for Mainz. His eight saves played a vital role in preventing the Bavarians from turning their dominance into goals. “It’s a bit annoying because we were leading 2-1. But if someone had told us we’d take a point away from the Allianz Arena, we would have signed up for it. Yes, it was a good team performance from all of us. We gave it our all and kept creating chances,” said Batz who had a memorable night in Munich.

Positives to take back home

Mainz deserves all the credit for playing their hearts out. Being the last placed team in the league did not stop Urs Fischer and his men to play bold against the table toppers. The intensity and conviction to create their goal opportunity always kept them in the game. Their effort from the defense, keeping, clinical finishing from Potulski and Lee paired with the beautiful crosses from Stefan Bell and William Bøving were worthy of a draw against a steamrolling Bayern Munich.
